There is also royalties if you were ever to consider selling. It's mostly just minor preferences in the engine here or there, and then what language you are most comfortable with using. UE also has a blueprint system which is good for those with little to no scripting experience, but you said you do, or for fast prototyping. One thing to consider is that Unity uses an adapted version of C#, where as UE uses C++. I was debating whether or not I wanted to use Unity or UE, but i'm ultimately going to use Unity, at least initially, due to having more experience with it.

It depends on what type of environment you want, but both Unity and UE are fantastic pieces of software that will get the job done. Sorry for the monologue - I don't get out much Now all I want to do is VR and it doesn't look like I'll be playing Okami any time soon (unless I make a VR version :) ). Most of the people using FreePIE wanted it for VR so I had to get SteamVR running to see if it worked which lead me to VRidge. I only bought my PSMoves a few weeks ago for a PS3 game (Okami) and wanted to see if they could be used on pc. I watched /u/Fuseman live stream this week and found it quite a nice introduction for learning Unity. All my coding has been for experimental data collection and analysis. I love coding but haven't really developed much for fun before.

Out of curiosity are you only developing for Oculus or are you also supporting SteamVR/OpenVR? I'm also considering game development and am starting to play with Unity. The main developers are really quite brilliant! From my initial tests with three PSEyes and one PSMove it seems to work fine.
